RESUMO

Xingkai Lake, located in Heilongjiang Province, is an important fishery and agricultural base and is seriously polluted by agricultural non-point sources. To clarify the residual status of many pesticides in the surface water of Xingkai Lake, 27 types of pesticides, herbicides, and their degradation products were analyzed in rice paddy, drainage, and surface water around Xingkai Lake (China) during the rice heading and maturity periods. The results showed that all 27 types of pesticides, herbicides, and their degradation products were detected during the rice heading period, and the total concentration ranged from 247.97 to 6 094.49 ng·L-1. Additionally, 25 species were detected during the rice maturity period, and the total concentration ranged from 485.36 to 796.23 ng·L-1. In comparison, more pesticides, herbicides, and derived degradation products were detected during the heading period, and their total concentration was higher as well. During the rice heading period, atrazine, simetryn, and paclobutrazol were the main detected pesticides, atrazine and isoprothiolane were the main pesticides detected during the maturity period. The distribution characteristics of pesticides and herbicides in the surface water around Xingkai Lake (China) was similar to that in drainage, so they were probably imported from the drainage and rice paddy. The average risk quotient (RQ) values of atrazine, simetryn, prometryn, butachlor, isoprothiolane, and oxadiazon were higher than 0.1 in drainage and Xingkai Lake (China), which showed a potential risk to aquatic organisms.

RESUMO

To reveal the changes in the flavor quality of chicken osteopontin (CO) before and after enzymatic hydrolysis and a thermal reaction, the present study was carried out to evaluate the volatile compounds and non-volatile compounds in CO. The results show that the chicken boneset enzymatic solution (CBES) presented a notably richer aroma after the enzymatic hydrolysis treatment. At the same time, the concentrations of the total free amino acids (FAAs) and 5'-nucleotides in the CBES increased dramatically. The ERP (enzymatic reaction paste) scores and the ORC (osteopontin reactive cream) scores were exceptionally high in terms of the umami and salty flavor profiles. As precursors, FAAs and 5'-nucleotides also boosted the Maillard reaction, leading to the generation of wide volatile compounds. Compared to CO, CBES, and ORC, the sensory evaluation showed that ERP scored the highest. In summary, the enzymatic hydrolysis treatment coupled with the Maillard reaction significantly enhanced the flavor profile of CO. These findings offer valuable insights into the high-value utilization of bone by-products, making a significant advancement in the field.

RESUMO

The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world with more than 6300 km, covering 0.4 billion people. However, the aquatic ecosystem of the Yangtze River has been seriously damaged in the past decades due to a rapid development of economic and industrialization along the coast. In this study, we first established a dataset of fifty elements, including nine common heavy metals (HMs) and forty-one other elements, in the Yangtze River Basin through the collection of historical data from 2000 to 2020, and then analyzed their spatiotemporal distribution characteristics. The results indicated that the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), a region formed by the construction of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), may act as a sink for these elements from upstream regions. The concentrations of seven elements in surface water and 13 elements in sediment obviously increased from the upstream region of the TGR to the TGR. In addition, ten elements in the surface water and 5 elements in the sediments clearly decreased, possibly because of the interception effects of the TGD. On a timescale, Cr obviously tended to migrate from the water phase to the sediment; Pb tended to migrate from the sediment to the water phase. In the ecological risk assessment, all common HMs in surface water were supposed to have negligible risks as protecting 90 % of aquatic organisms; Cd (210.2), Hg (58.0) and As (43.1) in sediment posed high and moderate ecological risks using the methodology of the potential ecological risk index. Furthermore, Hunan Province is at considerable risk according to the sum of the potential risk index (314.8) due to Cd pollution (66.8 %). These fundamental data and results will support follow-up control strategies for elements and policies related to aquatic ecosystem protection in the Yangtze River Basin.

RESUMO

Fibrotic scar is one of the main impediments to axon regeneration following spinal cord injury (SCI). In this study, we found that CD44 was upregulated during the formation of fibrotic scar, and blocking CD44 by IM7 caused downregulation of fibrosis-related extracellular matrix proteins at both 2 and 12 weeks post-spinal cord injury. More Biotinylated dextran amine (BDA)-traced corticospinal tract axons crossed the scar area and extended into the distal region after IM7 administration. A recovery of motor and sensory function was observed based on Basso Mouse Scale (BMS) scores and tail-flick test. In vitro experiments revealed that inhibiting CD44 and JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway decreased the proliferation, differentiation, and migration of fibroblasts induced by the inflammatory supernatant. Collectively, these findings highlight the critical role of CD44 and its downstream JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway in fibrotic scar formation, suggesting a potential therapeutic target for SCI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common complications of diabetes and the main cause of non-traumatic amputation, with no ideal treatment. Multiple cell-derived exosomes have been reported to improve the progression of DPN. Blood therapy is thought to have a powerful repairing effect. However, whether it could also improve DPN remains unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we found that microRNA (miRNA) expression in plasma-derived exosomes of healthy rats (hplasma-exos) was significantly different from that of age-matched DPN rats. By injection of hplasma-exos into DPN rats, the mechanical sensitivity of DPN rats was decreased, the thermal sensitivity and motor ability were increased, and the nerve conduction speed was accelerated. Histological analysis showed myelin regeneration of the sciatic nerve, increased intraepidermal nerve fibers, distal local blood perfusion, and enhanced neuromuscular junction and muscle spindle innervation after hplasma-exos administration. Compared with plasma exosomes in DPN, miR-20b-3p was specifically enriched in exosomes of healthy plasma and was found to be re-upregulated in the sciatic nerve of DPN rats after hplasma-exos treatment. Moreover, miR-20b-3p agomir improved DPN symptoms to a level similar to hplasma-exos, both of which also alleviated autophagy impairment induced by high glucose in Schwann cells. Mechanistic studies found that miR-20b-3p targeted Stat3 and consequently reduced the amount of p-Stat3, which then negatively regulated autophagy processes and contributed to DPN improvement. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that miRNA of plasma exosomes was different between DPN and age-matched healthy rats. MiR-20b-3p was enriched in hplasma-exos, and both of them could alleviated DPN symptoms. MiR-20b-3p regulated autophagy of Schwann cells in pathological states by targeting Stat3 and thereby inhibited the progression of DPN.

RESUMO

The histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi) was a milestone in the treatment of refractory T-cell lymphoma. However, the beneficial effects of HDACi have not been appreciated in osteoarthritis (OA). Herein, we implemented a microcarrier system because of the outstanding advantages of controlled and sustained release, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. The poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microcapsules have a regulated and sustained release profile with a reduced initial burst release, which can improve the encapsulation efficiency of the Chidamide. The emulsion solvent evaporation strategy was used to encapsulate Chidamide in PLGA microcapsules. The encapsulation of Chidamide was established by UV-vis spectra and scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, the inhibition of Tnnt3 and immune stimulation by Chidamide helped to inhibit cartilage destruction and prevent articular cartilage degeneration. Based on the results, the Chidamide in PLGA microcapsules provides a transformative therapeutic strategy for the treatment of osteoarthritis patients to relieve symptoms and protect against cartilage degeneration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Maintaining the repair phenotype of denervated Schwann cells in the injured distal nerve is crucial for promoting peripheral nerve regeneration. However, when chronically denervated, the capacity of Schwann cells to support repair and regeneration deteriorates, leading to peripheral nerve regeneration and poor functional recovery. Herein, we investigated whether neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) could sustain the reparative phenotype of Schwann cells and promote peripheral nerve regeneration after chronic denervation and aimed to uncover its potential molecular mechanisms. METHODS: Western blot was employed to investigate the relationship between the expression of c-Jun and the reparative phenotype of Schwann cells. The inducible expression of c-Jun by NT-3 was examined both in vitro and in vivo with western blot and immunofluorescence staining. A chronic denervation model was established to study the role of NT-3 in peripheral nerve regeneration. The number of regenerated distal axons, myelination of regenerated axons, reinnervation of neuromuscular junctions, and muscle fiber diameters of target muscles were used to evaluate peripheral nerve regeneration by immunofluorescence staining, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Adeno-associated virus (AAV) 2/9 carrying shRNA, small molecule inhibitors, and siRNA were employed to investigate whether NT-3 could signal through the TrkC/ERK pathway to maintain c-Jun expression and promote peripheral nerve regeneration after chronic denervation. RESULTS: After peripheral nerve injury, c-Jun expression progressively increased until week 5 and then began to decrease in the distal nerve following denervation. NT-3 upregulated the expression of c-Jun in denervated Schwann cells, both in vitro and in vivo. NT-3 promoted peripheral nerve regeneration after chronic denervation, mainly by upregulating or maintaining a high level of c-Jun rather than NT-3 itself. The TrkC receptor was consistently presented on denervated Schwann cells and served as NT-3 receptors following chronic denervation. NT-3 mainly upregulated c-Jun through the TrkC/ERK pathway. CONCLUSION: NT-3 promotes peripheral nerve regeneration by maintaining the repair phenotype of Schwann cells after chronic denervation via the TrkC/ERK/c-Jun pathway. It provides a potential target for the clinical treatment of peripheral nerve injury after chronic denervation.

RESUMO

The rhizosphere effect of plants affects soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization. It is still unclear for the mechanism by which the rhizosphere effect of dominant plants in secondary broadleaved forest habitats invaded by moso bamboo affects SOC mineralization. Taking broadleaved tree species (Quercus glauca and Cunninghamia lanceolata) and moso bamboo, dominating respectively in uninvaded secondary broadleaved forest and bamboo forest formed after the invasion as test materials, we investigated rhizosphere effect of plants on the SOC mineralization in laboratory incubation experiments. The results showed that carbon mineralization rates of Phyllostachys edulis (PE), Quercus glauca (QG) and Cunninghamia lanceolata (CL) rhizosphere soils were 20%, 26%, and 21% higher than bulk soils, respectively. Carbon mineralization of bulk soils of QG and CL was 22% and 26% higher, while that of rhizosphere soils was 14% and 11% higher than PE, respectively. The contents of water-soluble organic carbon and organic carbon in rhizosphere soils of the three species were significantly higher than those of bulk soil, and the abundance of rhizosphere soil bacteria was higher than that of non-rhizosphere. The contents of microbial biomass carbon, water-soluble organic carbon, and total nitrogen were important factors influencing carbon mineralization in rhizosphere, while water-soluble organic carbon and microbial metabolic quotient were important factors influencing carbon mineralization in non-rhizosphere. On the whole, the rhizosphere effect increased total SOC mineralization, driving by changes in microbial biomass carbon, water-soluble organic carbon, and total nitrogen content. The results could provide a theoretical basis for plant-soil interaction on soil carbon cycling in bamboo invasion habitats.

RESUMO

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) drinking bottles, rubber tires, and concrete are the very common municipal solid wastes, which are usually disposed of at landfills and stockpiles and cause continuous damage to the environment. Some studies have indicated that waste PET can be chemically converted into an additive for improving the overall properties of asphalt pavement incorporating natural aggregates, especially the moisture-induced damage resistance. However, it is not clear whether this PET additive still works for asphalt rubber containing recycled concrete aggregates (RCA). To well reveal this issue, this study first adopted a similar way to chemically recycle waste PET into the additive for modifying crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) binder and then mixed the binder with the 13 mm maximum aggregate stone matrix asphalt containing 100% coarse RCA for preparing the mixtures. After a series of physicochemical characterizations of the PET additive, the moisture resistance, rutting resistance, low-temperature cracking resistance, and fatigue resistance of the mixture were systematically evaluated. The results showed that the PET additive is capable of improving the resistance to moisture and high-temperature deformation of asphalt rubber and helps greatly reduce the moisture-induced damage to the interfacial bonding layer. To be more detailed, the residual Marshall stability (RMS) value of RCA-CRMAM/1PET after 72 h of immersion is higher than 85% by contrast to that of RCA-CRMAM (77.1%), while the tensile strength ratio (TSR) value of RCA-CRMAM/1PET shows more than 80% compared to that of 65.2%. In addition, only 1% PET additive can enhance the high-temperature resistance of asphalt rubber containing RCA to rut and allow it to maintain higher resistance to rut after moisture-induced damage. 1% PET additive can help improve the bearing capacity of RCA-CRMAM under a low-temperature environment and delay its fatigue life at small stresses. Generally, with the successful introduction of PET additives to asphalt rubber containing RCA, more durable and sustainable highway pavement can be produced and applied in practice to alleviate the negative impacts caused by waste PET, waste tire rubber, and waste concrete.

RESUMO

Due to the comparable stability between the perfect-base pair and the wobble-base pair, a precise differentiation of the wobble-type allele has remained a challenge, often leading to false results. Herein, we proposed a ligase chain reaction (LCR)-based ratiometric electrochemical DNA sensor, namely, R-eLCR, for a precise typing of the wobble-type allele, in which the traditionally recognized "negative" signal of wobble-base pair-mediated amplification was fully utilized as a "positive" one and a ratiometric readout mode was employed to ameliorated the underlying potential external influence and improved its detection accuracy in the typing of the wobble-type allele. The results showed that the ratio between current of methylene blue (IMB) and current of ferrocene (IFc) was partitioned in three regions and three types of wobble-type allele were thus precisely differentiated (AA homozygote: IMB/IFc > 2; GG homozygote: IMB/IFc < 1; GA heterozygote: 1 < IMB/IFc < 2); the proposed R-eLCR successfully discriminated the three types of CYP2C19*2 allele in nine cases of human whole blood samples, which was consistent with those of the sequencing method. These results evidence that the proposed R-eLCR can serve as an accurate and robust alternative for the identification of wobble-type allele, which lays a solid foundation and holds great potential for precision medicine.

RESUMO

Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV), a member of the genus Polerovirus in the family Luteoviridae, causes severe damage and represents a great threat to sugarcane cultivation and sugar industry development. In this study, inoculation of Nicotiana benthamiana plants with a potato virus X (PVX)-based vector carrying the SCYLV P0 gene induced typical mosaic, leaf rolling symptoms and was associated with a hypersensitive-like response (HLR) necrosis symptom, which is accompanied with a systemic burst of H2O2 and also leads to higher PVX viral genome accumulation levels. Our results demonstrate that SCYLV P0 is a pathogenicity determinant and plays important roles in disease development. To further explore its function in pathogenic processes, a yeast two-hybrid assay was performed to screen the putative P0-interacting host factors. The recombinant plasmid pGBKT7-P0 was constructed as a bait and transformed into the yeast strain Y2HGold. The ROC22 cultivar (an important parental resource of the main cultivar in China) cDNA prey library was constructed and screened by co-transformation with the P0 bait. We identified 28 potential interacting partners including those involved in the optical signal path, plant growth and development, transcriptional regulation, host defense response, and viral replication. To our knowledge, this is the first time we have reported the host proteins interacting with the P0 virulence factor encoded by sugarcane yellow leaf virus. This study not only provides valuable insights into elucidating the molecular mechanism of the pathogenicity of SCYLV, but also sheds light on revealing the probable new pathogenesis of Polerovirus in the future.

RESUMO

The incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is increasing with age. DNA fragments is known to accumulate in certain autoimmune diseases, but the mechanistic relationship among ageing, DNA fragments and RA pathogenesis remain unexplored. Here we show that the accumulation of DNA fragments, increasing with age and regulated by the exonuclease TREX1, promotes abnormal activation of the immune system in an adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rat model. Local overexpression of TREX1 suppresses synovial inflammation in rats, while conditional genomic deletion of TREX1 in AIA rats result in higher levels of circulating free (cf) DNA and hence abnormal immune activation, leading to more severe symptoms. The dysregulation of the heterodimeric transcription factor AP-1, formed by c-Jun and c-Fos, appear to regulate both TREX1 expression and SASP induction. Thus, our results confirm that DNA fragments are inflammatory mediators, and TREX1, downstream of AP-1, may serve as regulator of cellular immunity in health and in RA.

RESUMO

Background: There was still no effective treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Recently, many preclinical studies had shown promising efficacy of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from various cell sources. Our aim was to compare which cell-derived EVs were most effective in treating TBI through a network meta-analysis. Methods: We searched four databases and screened various cell-derived EVs for use in preclinical studies of TBI treatment. A systematic review and network meta-analysis were conducted for two outcome indicators, modified Neurological Severity Score (mNSS) and Morris Water Maze (MWM), and they were ranked by the surface under the cumulative ranking curves (SUCRA). Bias risk assessment was performed with SYRCLE. R software (version 4.1.3, Boston, MA, USA) was used for data analysis. Results: A total of 20 studies were included in this study, involving 383 animals. Astrocyte-derived extracellular vesicles (AEVs) ranked first in response to mNSS at day 1 (SUCRA: 0.26%), day 3 (SUCRA: 16.32%), and day 7 (SUCRA: 9.64%) post-TBI. Extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCEVs) were most effective in mNSS assessment on day 14 (SUCRA: 21.94%) and day 28 (SUCRA: 6.26%), as well as MWM's escape latency (SUCRA: 6.16%) and time spent in the target quadrant (SUCRA: 86.52%). The result of mNSS analysis on day 21 showed that neural stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (NSCEVs) had the best curative effect (SUCRA: 6.76%). Conclusion: AEVs may be the best choice to improve early mNSS recovery after TBI. The efficacy of MSCEVs may be the best in the late mNSS and MWM after TBI. RESUMO

As an enzyme-free exponential nucleic acid amplification method, the click chemistry-mediated ligation chain reaction (ccLCR) has shown great prospects in the molecular diagnosis. However, the current optics-based ccLCR is challenged by remarkable nonspecific amplification, severely hindering its future application. This study demonstrated that the severe nonspecific amplification was generated probably due to high random collision in the high DNA probe concentration (µM level). To solve this hurdle, a nucleic acid template-dominated ccLCR was constructed using nM-level DNA probes and read on an electrochemical platform (cc-eLCR). Under the optimal conditions, the proposed cc-eLCR detected a low-level nucleic acid target (1 fM) with a single-base resolution. Furthermore, this assay was applied to detect the target of interest in cell extracts with a satisfactory result. The proposed cc-eLCR offers huge possibility for click chemistry-mediated enzyme-free exponential nucleic acid amplification in the application of medical diagnosis and biomedical research.

RESUMO

The magnetic flux noise caused by surface spin fluctuations in superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) limits their development. In this work, we report that different adsorbents such as H, O2, NO, and NO2 that adsorb on the surfaces of Mg-based and Pb-based SQUIDs, respectively, producing large local magnetic moments ranging from 0.7-1.6 µB, with energy barriers for thermal spin fluctuation as low as 10-30 mK. Moreover, we observe that the presence of H atoms on the surface of MgO can cause the coadsorption of other molecules, which generates additional spin sources. Monte Carlo simulations of the weakly coupled spin on a two-dimensional square lattice produce a low-frequency flux noise spectrum. We suggest eliminating the surface magnetism by coating the surface with monolayer indium phosphide or protecting the surface from other molecules by nonmagnetic preoccupants with a larger adsorption energy. The work provides important physical insights and feasible strategies for reducing magnetic noise sources in superconducting circuits.

RESUMO

As a promising environment-friendly alternative to current vapor-compression refrigeration, solid-state refrigeration based on the barocaloric effect has been attracting worldwide attention. Generally, both phases in which a barocaloric effect occurs are present at ambient pressure. Here, instead, we demonstrate that KPF6 exhibits a colossal barocaloric effect due to the creation of a high-pressure rhombohedral phase. The phase diagram is constructed based on pressure-dependent calorimetric, Raman scattering, and neutron diffraction measurements. The present study is expected to provide an alternative routine to colossal barocaloric effects through the creation of a high-pressure phase.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Complete removal of paraspinal schwannomas is generally required for full patient recovery. However, traditional open approaches to surgery are often extensive and may lead to more postoperative complications. Herein, we present our preliminary experience with tubular minimally invasive resection of McCormick type II paraspinal schwannomas and describe the technique by specifically reviewing two patient cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Type of study: Retrospective: Level of evidence: Level III: A total of 15 patients (six men; nine women; median age, 45 years) who underwent minimally invasive resection of McCormick type II paraspinal schwannomas were retrospectively analysed. Preoperative characteristics, including age, location of tumour, Visual Analog Scale score, Modified McCormick Scale score, and intraoperative findings and complications were analysed. Furthermore, postoperative outcomes using imaging, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and thin-slice computed tomography, and postoperative neural status using the Modified McCormick and Visual Analog Scales were also assessed. RESULTS: The mean operation time was 134.72 ± 34.21 min. The estimated mean blood loss and mean hospital stay were 25.33 ± 17.27 ml and 7.67 ± 1.88 days, respectively. Regarding complications, one of the patients had a local wound infection, which improved after antibiotic treatment. The total resection in all cases was verified using postoperative MRI. CONCLUSION: The tubular minimally invasive approach is a feasible technique for the total resection of McCormick type II paraspinal schwannomas. Using this technique, surgeons can resect paraspinal schwannomas while maintaining spinal stability.

RESUMO

It is imperative to quantitatively analyze the long-term temporal and spatial characteristics of the urban heat island (UHI) effect on cities for applications, such as urban expansion and environmental protection. Owing to the high spatial resolution and availability of long time-series data, remote sensing images from Landsat satellites are widely used for land surface temperature (LST) retrieval. However, limited by the satellite revisit cycle and image quality, the use of multisource Landsat images in a long-term study of the UHI effect is inevitable. Nonetheless, owing to the differences among multisource sensors, such as Landsat-7 and Landsat-8, there may be apparent deviations in the LST results retrieved from different sensor data, which are obtained from the same area and under similar circumstances. Consequently, it is necessary to build a relationship between the LST results generated from multisource Landsat sensors for future research on the UHI effect. In this study, Shenzhen city was studied to explore the fitting relationship between the corresponding LST products from Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 images obtained from adjacent dates with similar climatic conditions. Furthermore, factors affecting the fitting models, such as land cover types, seasonal and inter-annual differences, were analyzed. The constructed fitting model had a strong relationship with land cover types but a relatively weak relationship with seasonal and inter-annual differences; this indicates that a pseudo Landsat-8-based LST product can be generated from a Landsat-7-based LST product using a model fitted by a Landsat-7/8 pair obtained from adjacent years (or different seasons). Finally, by considering the consistency between LST products from multisource Landsat images, the spatiotemporal variations in the UHI effect in Shenzhen can be accurately explored using long time-series data.

RESUMO

Lidocaine, a potent local anesthetic, is clinically used in nerve block and pain management. However, due to its short half-life, repeated administration is required. For this reason, here we designed and prepared a lidocaine-encapsulated polylactic acid-glycolic acid (Lidocaine@PLGA) microcapsule with ultrasound responsiveness to relieve the sciatica nerve pain. With a premixed membrane emulsification strategy, the fabricated lidocaine-embedded microcapsules possessed uniform particle size, good stability, injectability, and long-term sustained release both in vitro and in vivo. More importantly, Lidocaine@PLGA microcapsules had the function of ultrasonic responsive release, which made the drug release controllable with the effect of on-off administration. Our research showed that using ultrasound as a trigger switch could promote the rapid release of lidocaine from the microcapsules, achieving the dual effects of long-term sustained release and short-term ultrasound-triggered rapid release, which can enable the application of ultrasound-responsive Lidocaine@PLGA microcapsules to nerve root block and postoperative pain relief.

RESUMO

In aquatic systems, sediment is both a sink for persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and a potential source of POPs release. Consequently, it is important to understand the pollution characteristics and sources of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) as POPs of Stockholm Convention in sediment for control of the ecological risk. Atmospheric deposition is a potential source of PCNs in sediment. However, there is no clear report on the contribution of atmospheric deposition to PCNs in sediments. In this study, the Chaobai River in China was selected because it is an important drinking water source that is not affected by wastewater discharge. Surface sediments from the river were analyzed for 75 PCN congeners by using high resolution gas chromatography combined with high resolution mass spectrometry. The total PCNs concentration ranged from 54 to 2266 (mean: 402) pg/g. The toxic equivalent quantity of 19 PCNs in surface sediments was 9.69 × 10-2, and CN73, CN66/CN67, and CN63 had the largest contributions to this value. Dichlorinated and trichlorinated naphthalenes were the dominant homologs. The PCN data from the sediment samples in this study were combined with data for PCNs in ambient air from a literature, which has a good match with this study in both temporal and spatial scales. The contribution of atmospheric deposition to PCNs in the surface sediment was evaluated by comparing congener characteristics and correlation analysis. Our study indicated atmospheric transportation and deposition are important pathways for transport of PCNs into surface sediments.
